How Ratings Work

Honest scores from real experience.

Your rating, your tier

Routine

Holy grail. A permanent staple.

Repurchase

Will buy again.

Okay

Does the job.

Pass

Didn't work for me.

Regret

Wish I hadn't.

Most products naturally fall in the Okay to Repurchase range. Routine-level scores are uncommon and reflect sustained high ratings from the community.

How community scores are calculated

Community scores reflect the collective experience of Routine Shelf members — weighted toward reviews that demonstrate genuine, firsthand knowledge.

Having a product on your shelf signals real ownership. Writing about your experience shows thoughtful reflection. Adding a photo grounds your review in reality. Each of these contributes more to the community score than a quick rating alone.

We believe that someone who owns a product, has used it over time, and takes a moment to share their honest experience offers more to the community than a quick star tap. Our scoring reflects that belief.

There are no “power users” or influence levels. A new member who writes a thorough review carries the same weight as someone who’s been here for years. What matters is the effort you put into each review — not how many you’ve written.

Reading the Score

Not all scores are created equal. A product with hundreds of reviews and a score of 4.2 tells a very different story than a product with 2 reviews and a score of 4.2.

That’s why each score is shown alongside the number of ratings behind it. Products with very few ratings appear with a softer, more transparent score — a visual reminder that the number is still forming. As more reviews come in, the score solidifies.

The tier distribution on every product page shows the full picture — how many members rated each tier. We believe this tells a richer story than any single number.

Your reviews matter

Every review shapes the community’s understanding of a product. Here’s how to make yours count:

01

Add the product to your shelf

it signals you actually own or have used it.

02

Write about your experience

even a few sentences help others decide.

03

Share a photo

it adds authenticity and grounds your review.

The more you share, the more your review contributes to the score.

Our commitment

We don’t adjust scores to favor brands, products, or users. The methodology described on this page is the complete system — no hidden factors, no secret adjustments. If we ever change how scores work, we’ll tell you here first.
